Many people are shocked to see how deficient they are in a variety of key vitamins and minerals. How does it happen? While what you eat and how well you are digesting your food are two very important factors, an often missed cause are the medications you are taking. Many of these nutrients are vital to your overall health. This would include your heart and bone health. While supplementing with extra nutrients is helpful, finding the cause of the problem and correcting it would eliminate the need for the medication in the first place and should be your goal. If you are finding your-self taking the following medications, we may be able to help.

  • Aspirin depletes:
    • Folate – is needed for the body’s cells to divide
    • Thiamin – which helps our body can use carbohydrates as energy – it is essential for sugar metabolism
  • Aluminum based antacids deplete:
    • Magnesium – used in regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA
    • Phosphates – the body needs phosphorus to build and repair bones and teeth, help nerves function, and make muscles contract
    • Potassium – which plays an important role in electrolyte regulation, nerve function, muscle control, and blood pressure
  • Gluco-corticoids (steroids like prednisone) deplete:
    • Amino Acids – help to control obesity and malnutrition and also help to remove waste from the bloodstream. A deficiency in amino acids can lead to reduced energy levels and metabolism, skin and hair loss, digestive problems, sleeping disorders, stress, and poor health in general.
    • Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) – helps growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body; helps the body make collagen, an important protein used to make skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels; needed for healing wounds, and for repairing and maintaining bones and teeth
    • Magnesium – used in regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA
    • Potassium – which plays an important role in electrolyte regulation, nerve function, muscle control, and blood pressure
    • Zinc – helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses, helps make proteins and DNA
  • Methotrexate depletes:
    • Folate – is needed for the body’s cells to divide
    • Thiamin – which helps our body can use carbohydrates as energy – it is essential for sugar metabolism
  • Statin drugs (Zocor, Lipitor, Simvistatin etc.) deplete:
    • CoQ10 – helps treat high blood pressure and heart disease, enhances immune system , energy boost for people dealing with fatigue, reduces high cholesterol levels in the blood, stabilizes blood sugar levels of people with diabetes, assists in the treatment of cancer or the protection of organs from toxic chemotherapy drugs, treats gum disease, slows the progression of dementia, increases sperm count and motility, helps preventing or treating migraine headaches
  • Anticonvulsants (phenobarbitol, phenytoin, primidone) deplete:
    • Vitamin D – helps the body absorb calcium (one of bone’s main building blocks) from food and supplements. Too little vitamin D may develop soft, thin, and brittle bones, a condition known as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults and has been linked to breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, depression, weight gain, and other maladies.
    • Vitamin K – plays an important role in blood clotting, is essential to building strong bones, preventing heart disease, and crucial part of other bodily processes
  • Clofibrate and Colestipol deplete:
    • Vitamin A – involved with your vision, aiding in cell differentiation, boosting your immune system, and helping with reproduction and growth of your body
  • Metformin depletes:
    • Vitamin B12 – helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA; deficiency causes tiredness, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, nerve problems (such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet), problems with balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness of the mouth or tongue.
  • Antiinflammatories (Azufidine, Sulfasalazine) deplete:
    • Folate – is needed for the body’s cells to divide
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors (Nexium/esomeprasole, Prevacid/lansoprazole, Prilosec/omeprazole etc.) and H2-Receptor Antagonists (ranitidine, nizatidine, famotidine, cimetidine) deplete:

    • Calcium – In addition to building bones and keeping them healthy, calcium helps our blood clot, nerves send messages and muscles contract
    • Zinc – helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses, helps make proteins and DNA
  • Oral contraceptives deplete:
    • Folate – is needed for the body’s cells to divide
    • Vitamin C – helps growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body; helps the body make collagen, an important protein used to make skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels; needed for healing wounds, and for repairing and maintaining bones and teeth
