What exactly are the benefits of receiving massage therapy?   Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can: •Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion. •Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system. •Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin. •Increase joint flexibility. •Lessen depression and anxiety. •Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation. •Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles. •Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller. •Relieve migraine pain.   There is no denying  massage therapy can be a powerful benifit in your healthcare regimen.  Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related and nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This leads to: •Decreased anxiety. •Enhanced sleep quality. •Greater energy. •Improved concentration. •Reduced fatigue.   In addition, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance massage provides can often be just as valuable as the physical benefits. In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes flow throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage: •Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain. •Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function •Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety. •High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones. •Preterm infants have improved weight gain.   Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch—which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles. Getting a massage can do you a world of good.  Going for massage at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health. And remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn’t mean it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and work with your practitioner to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.   Are you interested in experiencing the many benefits of massage?  Come into SpineWise Bowmanville to enjoy a massage with one of our Registered Massage Therapists.  Call us at 905-623-8388

fastingA person’s entire immune system can be rejuvenated by fasting for as little as three days as it triggers the body to start producing new white blood cells, a study suggests. Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as “remarkable”. Although fasting diets have been criticised by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection. Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy. It could also help the elderly whose immune system becomes less effective as they age, making it harder for them to fight off even common diseases. The researchers say fasting “flips a regenerative switch” which prompts stem cells to create brand new white blood cells, essentially regenerating the entire immune system “It gives the ‘OK’ for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system,” said Prof Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the University of California. “And the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting. “Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or ageing, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.” Prolonged fasting forces the body to use stores of glucose and fat but also breaks down a significant portion of white blood cells. During each cycle of fasting, this depletion of white blood cells induces changes that trigger stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells. In trials humans were asked to regularly fast for between two and four days over a six-month period. Scientists found that prolonged fasting also reduced the enzyme PKA, which is linked to ageing and a hormone which increases cancer risk and tumour growth. “We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the hematopoietic system,” added Prof Longo. “When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged,” Dr Longo said. “What we started noticing in both our human work and animal work is that the white blood cell count goes down with prolonged fasting. Then when you re-feed, the blood cells come back. So we started thinking, well, where does it come from?” Fasting for 72 hours also protected cancer patients against the toxic impact of chemotherapy. “While chemotherapy saves lives, it causes significant collateral damage to the immune system. The results of this study suggest that fasting may mitigate some of the harmful effects of chemotherapy,” said co-author Tanya Dorff, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital. “More clinical studies are needed, and any such dietary intervention should be undertaken only under the guidance of a physician.” “We are investigating the possibility that these effects are applicable to many different systems and organs, not just the immune system,” added Prof Longo. However, some British experts were sceptical of the research. Dr Graham Rook, emeritus professor of immunology at University College London, said the study sounded “improbable”. Chris Mason, Professor of Regenerative Medicine at UCL, said: “There is some interesting data here. It sees that fasting reduces the number and size of cells and then re-feeding at 72 hours saw a rebound. “That could be potentially useful because that is not such a long time that it would be terribly harmful to someone with cancer. “But I think the most sensible way forward would be to synthesize this effect with drugs. I am not sure fasting is the best idea. People are better eating on a regular basis.” Dr Longo added: “There is no evidence at all that fasting would be dangerous while there is strong evidence that it is beneficial. “I have received emails from hundreds of cancer patients who have combined chemo with fasting, many with the assistance of the oncologists. “Thus far the great majority have reported doing very well and only a few have reported some side effects including fainting and a temporary increase in liver markers. Clearly we need to finish the clinical trials, but it looks very promising.”

How can Massage Therapy benefit you?

The various types of massages  can relax the muscles and tissues in your hands and wrists as well as provide other more comprehensive benefits. A decrease in pain is the first and most obvious result of targeted massage, but massage can also help to strengthen the grip in the hand and provide a preventative approach to future flair ups.

To Temporarily relieve pain on your own

To temporarily ease pain caused by this condition, keep the hand in a non-flexed position and avoid bending your wrist.  If the pain is persistent, apply an ice pack to the irritated area for intervals of 20 minutes with 30 minute breaks in between each application.

Regular Chiropractic visits

The every day stress of life can be just as damaging to the body in the long run as a one-time physical trauma. Stress literally wears on the body, affecting one’s balance, flexibility, and even the central nervous system. Having routine adjustments and massages can help erase every day tension and prevent more serious injuries. Simply visiting the chiropractor will help you feel less tense and have more energy on a daily basis.

The skeletal system is what supports the body and all of its movements. The spine is at the core of this support system, so it is essential that it stay properly aligned as much as possible. Improper body alignment can cause pain, chronic illness and more, which is why it is important to get regular chiropractic adjustments and massages before pain becomes an issue.

While many wait for a car accident or other trauma-related incident to first visit a chiropractor, many health insurance policies offer affordable coverage for chiropractic visits, regardless of physical trauma. Use your insurance benefits for wellness by taking care of your body’s core support system and you’ll start feeling better right away.

Regular visits to the chiropractor are also a good idea for active individuals. When the body is regularly functioning at a high level of activity, the risk of injury increases. Visit your chiropractor frequently to help keep your body limber, flexible, and free from pain.

There are a number of other conditions that can benefit from chiropractic care including:
carpal tunnel syndrome
sleep disorders
chronic pain
high blood pressure
arthritis
migraines
back and neck issues
tension disorders and more
