What Does Kinesiology Tape Do and its Benefits

Kinesiology Tape is a revolutionary treatment method that provides therapeutic support while maintaining a full range of motion to alleviate pain, improve circulation, and facilitate lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin.

What Does Kinesiology Tape Do and its Benefits

Kinesio tape was developed in 1973 by Dr. Kenso Kase and is prescribed to induce a therapeutic effect.

Although there is much more research to be done, we know that applying kinesiology tape can help with reducing pain, cueing proprioceptive feedback for improved body awareness, decreasing localized swelling, improving range of motion and improving sports performance. There is no replacement for sensible injury management; a kinesiology tape is an excellent tool in every doctor’s toolbox.

Scientific studies have not shown a significant difference with applying the tape in one direction or another to either activate or inhibit a muscle. We suggest applying the tape in the most practical manner, using clinical reasoning as to where the tape should start and stop to improve outcomes with your treatment.

The reality is you don’t need to take a course at all to learn how to tape. Taking a course should complement the basics of application and expand your understanding of just how complimentary kinesiology tape can be to your current patient care.

They don’t have to be complicated at all. There should be the least amount of tape applied to get the job done. Cutting the tape into all sorts of shapes can get very complicated. Ultimately, the comfort and duration of wear of the application should be the most important factors in how the tape is applied.

Scientific studies have not shown a significant difference with applying specific percentages of stretch for optimal clinical outcomes. We know that stretching tape can cause skin irritations. We suggest to always starting applications with minimal stretch on the tape.
